Why should I donate my money, time or goods?

Answered By Aine Churches, Editor

The reasons of donating your money, time, or goods depend on the charitable institution you want to help and the situation where the donations are needed. For instance, the International Red Cross prefers donations to be made in form of cash in order to make immediate response in the affected country. Unlike goods or gifts that needs to be transported (thus the organization needs to spend on transportation costs), monetary donations can be easily transferred and converted into whatever is most needed. Furthermore, it also facilitates immediate emergency response to the affected area.

There are also charities that prefer donations in form of goods because they will not consume more time planning and buying goods, especially on cases where the local economy of the affected area is already down due to a calamity or disaster. If these goods are already made available, all they have to do is to pack it and immediately distribute it to affected families who need such items.

Whichever aforementioned case may be, time is one of the most essential donations you can make, especially for those who do not have sufficient capability of helping charities financially. By sharing your time for charitable activities and programs, you are helping such charitable organization in reducing their administrative costs and providing them the manpower that they need to bring charity works close to the people in need.
